I woke up with the warmth of the sun hitting my face. I got out of bed and went downstairs for breakfast. I opened the refrigerator door and decided to make pancakes for this morning, grabbing the necessary ingredients. While preparing with some good music playing, I heard a loud crashing sound. It was Luna (the Daughter of the Moon); she had obviously been awakened by all the noise. "Good morning, Luna," I said, as she ran over to me and said, "Did you hear, V?" I answered with confusion, "Exactly what should I have heard?" "Alpha is back," she said. What!? Alpha is back? Now that was both great news and strange at the same time; I hadn't seen Alpha in years, to be honest. Alpha, Alvin, Luna, and I had been a group of friends since childhood. We grew up and drifted apart, but with this news, perhaps we were very close to reuniting again. "This is wonderful news, Luna, let's have breakfast together then." Luna smiled and called Alvin.
These two had been in love with each other since childhood. My dear friend Luna, though stubborn, eventually fell in love, too, and they had formed a wonderful, childlike relationship that had lasted for years. I always wanted to be like them. There was a sibling-like rivalry between Alpha and me. Alpha was already older than all of us, so our arguments usually ended with him teasing us, and we'd end up hugging and becoming a bundle of love.
Alvin suggested having a nice breakfast in the campus garden, so we prepared a few things and set out. Luna turned to me and asked, "How are you feeling, V?" I told her I felt good. We connected the phone to the car and entered the campus with music playing. Luna's greatest fun was to blast music loudly and enjoy the attention as we drove into the campus parking lot.
After parking in a good spot, we went over to Alvin and Alpha. He was looking at us with eyes full of longing; time had treated him well, clearly. He had grown taller, his light brown hair was shiny and healthy, his hazel eyes were bright, and that magnificent smile was just as I remembered. "There's my favorite magician," he said, opening his arms. Of course, I ran over and hugged him tightly.
He called me a magician because, despite trying many times, I never managed to master magic, but he was still proud of me as if I were successful every time I tried. I liked that a lot. After an emotional reunion, we had so many jokes to catch up on over breakfast and chatted for hours, laughing endlessly.
During a moment of silence, I asked Alpha, "What brought you here?" But it was as if I had asked something I shouldn't have; everyone's face turned cold. "I transferred my registration here; I missed you guys a lot, and getting used to a foreign environment was a bit tough," he said, smiling. I was happy for him; if he hadn't felt safe with us, he wouldn't have disrupted his life and moved here. So knowing that he was comfortable and happy made me happy.
Class time was approaching, and Luna asked, "Are you coming with me, V?" I replied, "No, Luna, I haven't attended a psychology class in a while." Alpha immediately jumped in and said, "What a coincidence, I have a psychology class too. We can go together, and you can show me around the campus." "Of course, let's go," I said, and we said goodbye to Luna and Alvin, heading to the amphitheaters. The first class was so suffocating that we couldn't wait for the lunch break. Luckily, the professor let us out early, and we met up with the others in the cafeteria.
As always, Alvin had played the romantic, buying a rose for Luna and placing it on her plate. Seeing this, Alpha turned to me and said, "I hope there's no jerk for me to deal with? I have different plans for this year," he said, laughing. I had already figured that something mischievous would come out of all this calmness. Without hesitation, I replied, "What, haven't you found anyone yet?" I said, grinning. After some banter, we went back to the classroom and attended the class.
In the middle of the lesson, there was a sudden scream. I looked up and saw Professor Dunken yelling at Elliot. He called him to the board and told him to solve the problem in detail, shouting. Elliot nervously approached the board; the classroom was dead silent. Alpha turned to me and said, "How about a little fun?" and gave a sly grin. I replied, "Why not, let's see what you got," curious about what he would do. He was probably going to distract the class to save Elliot, so I didn't want to interfere and decided to watch what he would do. Alpha was staring intently at Professor Dunken; it was quite eerie. Some time passed, and I heard a whisper. Alpha murmured, "Open the ink and pour it," in a low voice. At that moment, I heard a collective gasp from the class, and when I turned around, I saw Elliot opening the ink bottle and pouring it over the Professor.
I was in shock, looking back and forth between Alpha and Elliot, trying to understand what had happened. There was less than a one percent chance that Elliot could have heard Alpha from that distance and at such a low volume. Alpha started whispering again, "You're the know-it-all professor; let's see if you can solve this problem." As he said that, hearing the same sentence from Elliot in a loud voice made my heart race. Suddenly, Elliot spread his arms and said, "That's it, you bastard, I'm quitting this class," then he poured the coffee on the professor's desk over him, saying, "Damn you, I hope you learn something," and stormed out of the room, leaving the class in shock and laughter.
Witnessing Alpha verbally dictate every move Elliot made had terrified and scared me. I was frozen. He turned to me and asked, "Did you enjoy that, sweetheart?" My voice was shaky, and the only thing I could say before passing out was, "I-I can't believe this, how is this possible, what are you?" He approached me and whispered confidently in my ear, "It doesn't matter how; this is who I am." Things became blurry and dark.
As I started to wake up, feeling the pain in my head, I could faintly hear Luna and Alvin's voices, "V, come on, wake up, are you okay? Hey, snap out of it," they were saying. I slightly opened my eyes and sat up in a panic. "Y-you!" I shouted, and Alvin asked, "Me?" I said no and pointed to Alpha. "Me? What's going on, Violet?" Alpha asked, "What do you mean, what's going on? Who are you, Alpha? What was that puppet show all about?" I asked. Luna said, "Calm down, V, what's going on, are you okay? You fainted badly," but I was confused. How had they seen me faint without being in the same class? "What do you mean, were you in the classroom too?" I asked, and Alvin replied, "No, V, we're in the cafeteria; your blood pressure suddenly dropped."
I looked around and realized we were indeed still in the cafeteria. So, had I been dreaming? But no, it couldn't have been a dream; I could feel it with all five senses. I turned to Alpha in shock, and he said, "It looks like you had a terrible nightmare." Frustrated, I shouted, "You're a great actor!" Luna was holding me, trying to calm me down. Alpha said, "That's why you should have asked 'Who are you?' not 'What are you?'" I couldn't take it anymore and asked, "Who are you?"
