A wounded Spider-Man stumbles toward his bed in his apartment. He takes off his mask to reveal a battered and bruised Peter Parker. He sits on his bed and puts his hand on his head in shame. He looks up and through his window and sees the brightly lit streets of New York. He closes his eyes, sighs, and lays down in his bed.
A new morning, Peter wakes up and tries to sit up. But he flinches in pain from the soreness. Eventually, he was able to get out of bed, then realized that he's still wearing his Spider-Man outfit. He inspects the rips and tears on his suit, luckily his injuries are starting to look better.
"Oh man," Peter shrugs, "thank God for the spare," He goes toward his closet and opens a box that has an almost identical look to the suit he's wearing, though, the blue is a lot more of a purple color.
Spider-Man walks over to the window and opens it before jumping out of the apartment and starting his morning swing. Spider-Man spends the morning stopping some petty crimes, slower than usual but only slightly. Out of nowhere, Peter's phone starts going off. Spider-Man lands on a wall and answers it.
"Hello?"
"Peter," Harry answers, with relief in his voice, "I was worried when you didn't meet up with me, or even call,"
"Oh my God, Harry," Peter sighs, "I am so sorry, I don't know if you saw but it was a little more than a fire.
"Oh I saw, had to take pictures of the bug?"
"Ding ding ding!" Peter responds, mimicking a gameshow bell. Harry slightly chuckles,
"Still a geek, well whatever pays the bills I guess," Harry hangs up immediately after saying that.
"Harry?" Peter checks, "Huh, that's odd," Spider-Man puts his phone back and jumps off the wall he is on, continuing his swing. He makes his way to The Daily Bugle, to submit some more pictures. On his way he stops a few more crimes, taking pictures along the way. He arrives at the bugle, making sure he is wearing his casual clothes, and enters the building.
Peter walks into Jameson's office with his folder in his hand. Jameson is sitting at his desk looking out of his window, but the sound of Peter opening the door gets him to turn around.
"Parker," he starts, "you look terrible," Referring to Peter's injuries as Spider-Man and his overall fatigued look, "Tell me you have pictures of that fiasco from yesterday?" He swipes the folder from Peter's hand and starts skimming through it. He seems pretty impressed with Peter until he sees the ones from earlier this morning.
"Everything okay?" Peter asks,
"No," Jameson starts, "everything is not okay, what is this?" He holds up the picture with the red and purple Spider-Man in front of Peter's face,
"It's-"
"I'll tell you what it is," Jameson interrupts, "This is a different guy, or it's the same guy, but that either means that a whole other additional person is terrorizing this city, or the arachnid is taking on a less marketable look,"
"But can't you edit it or something?"
"No, we are an honest newspaper, and if there's another Spider-Man, then we'll be the first to speak on it!" Peter is in sheer confusion,
"But-"
"But?" Jameson replies in a slightly mocking tone,
"But don't you spread lies about Spider-Man all the time?"
"No," Jameson starts, "I say what can be seen from a certain point of view, we are theorists, not liars," He writes and rips off his paycheck and hands it to Peter. Peter grabs the slim piece of paper and walks out of the office.
Peter walks out of The Daily Bugle, hanging his head low, thinking about what Jonah said. He walks out into an alleyway putting on his Spider-Man outfit. Spider-Man starts his second swing of the day through the New York streets.
"I need to check on Harry," Peter states to himself, before putting his mask back on and leaping out the window once more.
Peter approaches the door to Harry's penthouse and knocks on the door before returning his hands to his sides. Peter zones out a little into thought about the battle at Oscorp, and suddenly the door swings open. Harry is on the other side.
"Hey, buddy!" Harry says, going for a handshake. Peter shakes Harry's hand.
"You doing okay?" Peter asks, "You seem like something is going on,"
"Peter," Harry responds, "we could've died, you definitely could've,"
"Harry, I-"
"First you skip May's birthday to attempt to get Vulture pictures or whatever," Harry interrupts, "then you go and risk your skin just to get a paycheck. I mean," Harry grabs Peter by the shoulders, Peter flinches a little, "look at you, man. I mean you thought about that job opportunity, right? Once we get the drug back you can get right to work on it, you'd get paid what you're worth, you don't need this,"
"Harry, I would love to but, I can't accept," Harry slowly takes his hands off Peter, and walks backward,"
"Fine," Harry looks down and puts his hand on the door, "Do what you want, just leave us out of it," Harry slams the door in Peter's face. Peter looks down in shame, puts his hands in his pockets, and walks away. Harry leans on the door and slowly goes to sit on the floor. His knees are up to his face, and just sits there in silence.
Peter walks out of the building and starts walking through the streets. No Spider-Man, no swinging. He just walks and thinks about why he started being Spider-Man in the first place.
Out of nowhere, Peter's Spider-Sense starts going off. He turns around and sees a truck speeding through the streets, looking offly familiar. Peter narrows his eyes and without thinking, starts running for the truck. He crosses the street into an alleyway, he starts taking off his clothes to reveal his red and purple Spider-Man outfit. Spider-Man jumps and starts swinging out of the alleyway. He sees the truck again and makes his way toward it.
The person in the passenger seat looks out of his window and sees the red and purple menace swinging on his web toward them. He bangs on the outside of the truck and the back door swings open, revealing the others who bring out their weapons and prepare to fire.
"It's him!" Kearney yells out, ready to fight.
"Is that a different one!?" One of the others asks. Kearney makes a break for the cart with the vials on it. The others shoot at Spider-Man. Kearney grabs a vial that is half full and busts it open to drink the other half.
"Pull over!" He yells, the truck then turns right and comes to a complete stop. Kearney painfully falls out of the back of the truck, his muscles starting to grow and his body growing.
"Bingo!" Spider-Man uses two webs to slingshot himself toward Kearney and kicks him to the floor. Spider-Man backflips and lands on the floor, and the truck starts to speed off. "Does it feel good to have your friends abandon you?" Spider-Man quips to Kearney. Kearney's screams stop, and he stands up with a now hulking body.
"Oh," Kearney retaliates, "abandonment was the last thing in mind, they know I can handle this fight myself, and then some," Spider-Man shoots a web at Kearney but Kearney catches it with his hand and spins to backhand Spider-Man with it. Spider-Man bends over and dodges it. Kearney punches Spider-Man and he goes flying into the front of a car, breaking the windshield and severely denting it.
"You know you're going to have to pay for that, right?" Spider-Man asks with strain in his voice. Kearney charges at Spider-Man, Spider-Man leaps off the car and above Kearney. His Spider-Sense goes crazy, but he isn't able to move when Kearney grabs Spider-Man's leg and slams him into the car, absolutely destroying it. Spider-Man screams in agony. He grabs Kearney by his shoulders, lifts his legs onto him rolls a little bit, and kicks Kearney off of him. Kearney lands on his back on the rock-hard road.
Spider-Man crawls on the car, making his way toward Kearney, with his hand on his chest. He stumbles a little bit before standing up. Kearney rolls over and stands back up. Spider-Man's Spider-Sense starts going crazy while Kearney picks up another car and throws it at the webhead. Spider-Man jumps out of the way and shoots a web line at Kearney who grabs it and pulls Spider-Man toward him. Spider-Man uncontrollably speeds toward Kearney who sticks his arm out and Spider-Man runs into it, falling onto the ground. Kearney lifts his leg up to stomp the bug, but Spider-Man rolls out of the way. Kearney slaps his giant hand on Spider-Man who goes flying into the china shop they're by.
"Oh, you had to throw me here?" Spider-Man jokes, dodging the flying glass. He jumps back at Kearney with enough force to knock him to the ground. Spider-Man jumps off of Kearney and lands on the ground by the river. Kearney stands back up, Spider-Man puts his fists up and Kearney starts to run toward him. Spider-Man shoots a web at Kearney's eyes but he blocks it with his hand. This catches Spider-Man off guard and he feels his Spider-Sense going off when Kearney pushes him off the city, so Spider-Man falls into the river.
Kearney looks over as Spider-Man falls into the river, he waits a little for the bug to reemerge. But he doesn't. Kearney walks off.
Spider-Man swiftly swims toward a nearby sewer tunnel, he makes it and swims through it until there's an area where he can get above water. He reaches his hand out pulls himself out and gasps for air, ripping off his mask.
"What is that guy made of?" Spider-Man asks himself before laying on the cement. "No cuts this time, so that's a plus," Peter chuckles at his joke before striking back down into the situation he's in. He waits a while, catching his breath, before getting up and starts walking through the sewers. He starts limping along the way. "I can't keep doing this," Peter starts, "If I were only a little faster it wouldn't have ended like this, if only I had done more at Oscorp they wouldn't have even gotten the vials of whatever that is," Peter almost falls over but catches himself by grabbing onto the wall.
Peter eventually finds a ladder, "Finally," He excitedly says and starts speeding up the ladder to reach above ground. Before opening the manhole, he puts his soggy, wet mask back on and gets to the street. "Just need to make it home," Spider-Man gets ready to jump, "I can swing that long, right?" He leaps into the air he tries to shoot a web to swing on but soon realizes that the webshooters broke due to the water. "Uh oh," He says with fright as he lands on the roof of a car, denting it. The car's alarm goes off as Spider-Man lays on the vehicle. He rolls off of the roof and lands on the ground. "Been doing this for years and yet I still haven't waterproofed these," Spider-Man starts walking down the streets of New York, listening to nothing but his thoughts.
After walking toward his apartment building, it now being the afternoon, he sneakily climbs the wall up to his apartment window. He stumbles into his apartment and immediately starts looking for clothes to put on. Peter puts on his casual clothes, drycleans the red and purple suit just in case, and brings out the sewing kit. He looks in his closet and pulls out the box containing the famous red and blue suit in it. "Okay, let's fix this,"
After about 20 minutes of sewing, Peter's police scanner goes off.
"Huge robbery happening at the city bank," The operator announces. Peter jumps up and immediately grabs the red and purple suit, he throws it on and starts a swing toward the bank. Once he arrives there he sees the place in shambles, barely holding together, and on fire. He lands on the roof of the building and sees Kearney threatening a worker.
"Oh great," he announces, loud enough so that Kearney can hear, "my favorite group of criminals!" He jumps and shoots a web to speed himself toward Kearney, "How much money do you guys need anyway?"
Spider-Man shoots a web at Kearney and pulls himself toward Kearney using the web. Kearney grabs the web and pulls Spider-Man toward him. He grabs Spider-Man and shoves him into the stairs that he's on. Spider-Man gasps for air as he tries to escape Kearney's grasp.
"So," Spider-Man barely quips, "you didn't sell the drug?" Kearney doesn't respond, instead, he throws Spider-Man at a nearby pillar. Spider-Man hits the pillar, but before falling, he sticks to it. He faces the pillar, all four limbs on the pillar. "Thanks for the vantage point," Spider-Man smugly calls out. He looks back at the stairs to see Kearney making a break for the pillar. Before he can react, his spider-sense goes off. He looks around, seeing a goon about to fire at him. Spider-Man flips off the pillar and out of the way, gunfire roaring through the room, he webs the gun and yanks it out of the criminal's hands.
Spider-Man cleanly lands on the floor, in front of another criminal. He quickly turns around and grabs the goon's hand, which has a pistol in it, the goon uses his other hand to grab a knife and attempt to stab Spider-Man. He senses this and pulls the criminal over him before he can do anything. The impact is enough for the criminal to be incapacitated. Spider-Man climbs the nearby wall onto the balcony—the first criminal runs at the hero with his knife. Spider-Man webs him up, and he loses his footing and falls over. Kearney makes his way up the stairs to the balcony when Spider-Man jumps off it and lands on the villain's back.
Kearney frantically moves around, trying to knock off the webhead. Spider-Man is able to hang on with ease until his spider-sense rings again. Before he knows it, Kearney reaches over his back and grabs the hero. Kearney flings him to the other side of the bank. Spider-Man gains control of his fall and lands right before hitting the wall. Spider-Man recovers easily, he looks up to notice Kearney now making a full sprint towards him. Improvising, he uses his webs to try to slow down or even trip the speeding brute.
However, the webs just aren't enough as Kearney comes closer and closer to making Spider-Man red and blue jelly. Spider-Man leaps over Kearney's head just before he rams into the wall. The hero uses this opportunity to release a wave of punches on Kearney. Not much later, Kearney recovers and backhands his giant palms into Spider-Man. He is sent flying through the bank, this time Spider-Man isn't able to recover. He hits the rail to the balcony just before he realizes what's happened. Please tell me this other suit won't be ruined today Spider-Man thinks before getting up off the carpeted floor, "You'll have to do better than that!" He says before leaping back to Kearney.
"And you'll have to come up with better!" Kearney retaliates as he grabs Spider-Man out of the air and slams him onto the floor, the slam was hard enough to bounce Spider-Man. The hero tries to get up, lifting up his mask up to his mouth so that he can spit out blood, then putting the mask back down. He looks around to see himself surrounded by the group of criminals, all of them but Kearney are armed. Using most of his strength he jumps off the ground and web swings around the bank while the armed criminals shoot at him. Kearney, enraged, picks up a piece of debris and throws it at the masked hero. The debris doesn't hit Spider-Man but does hit his web. Spider-Man is able to grab onto a nearby pillar.
"Listen," Spider-Man jokes, "I know you guys miss the red and blue as much as I do but that doesn't mean you have to do all of this to turn me black and blue," As he quips, the criminals start to fire at him once more. He dives off the pillar and shoots a web on the pillar right under the gunfire. He holds onto the web as he swings around the pillar. The goons aim after the web-slinger, but can't keep up with him.
Eventually, they all run out of ammo. Once they go to reload, Spider-Man lets go of the web and falls fast toward the now-panicked perpetrators. Some of them grab their sidearm and fire frantically, Kearney charges toward Spider-Man. The hero shoots and pulls on webs to position himself behind the brute and his gang. Spider-Man lands on the back wall and instantly jumps off and onto a criminal. Kearney turns around as soon as he realizes what's going on.
Spider-Man takes out as many criminals as he can before Kearney throws a punch at the webhead. With his spider-sense directing him, he ducks under the punch. He stands back up and throws light rapid punches at the villain. Kearney takes it like it's nothing, turning around to face Spider-Man. Spider-Man slowly backs up, still in a fighting position. "You didn't take that personally, did you?" Spider-Man nervously jokes, still keeping his spirits up.
"You still quip?" In a calm and sinister voice, Kearney rhetorically asks, "You won't be when I'm done with you," Spider-Man's spider-sense starts going crazy, but before he can do anything, Kearney grabs his head and picks up the masked hero. Spider-Man groans in pain but can't say anything. "That shut you up," Kearney turns around and fiercely throws Spider-Man at the wall. Spider-Man breaks through and enters an alleyway, he hits the ground, bounces back, and hits a brick wall. He screams in pain after hitting in and falls back on the ground.
The hero still tries to get up. "Why do you continue trying!?" Kearney yells at Spider-Man as he walks out of the bank through the hole.
"Because the more annoying and stubborn I am, the angrier you get," Spider-Man quips, despite everything, "and I just love to see it,"
Kearney gets down to Spider-Man's level, "I'm going to love killing you, but it just isn't the time, yet," Spider-Man shoots a web at Kearney, but the brute grabs the hero's wrist and squeezes the life out of his webshooter. He then promptly twists Spider-Man's wrist. The web-slinger screams in pain afterward. "The best thing you could do," Kearney stands up, "is to just walk away,"
Kearney walks back into the bank as the defeated hero begins to pass out, still trying to stand back up. He faintly hears Kearney yell, "Grab the unconscious and put them back in the truck!" Spider-Man is awakened by the roars of the semi-truck. He starts to get up as he hears them drive off. He grabs onto some rubble for support, he gets in a kneeling position. He almost falls over but continues to try, screaming in agony. One foot touches the ground, then another.
Spider-Man stumbles through the alleyway, leaning on the wall. He has his hands on his ribs as he tries to make it to the road to stop the criminals. Spider-Man feels his legs start to give out, he still tries but falls to the ground just before he can make it out of the alleyway. Thunder roars through the streets of New York City as Spider-Man lays on the rough concrete in his torn suit. Police cars go flying by the empty city streets.
Spider-Man wakes up with a splitting headache, as well as being so sore he can barely move. He quickly realizes that he is not on the streets anymore, he feels comfort. So, this could be bad, he thinks as he opens his eyes only to be blinded by the blazing sun. He closes his eyes again and feels around his area, feeling the floor and the back of a couch. Of all the places to mysteriously wake up on, a couch is definitely an odd one. Eventually, Spider-Man's eyes adjust enough for him to look around. Spider-Man sees a familiar apartment, oh no.
Suddenly, Mary Jane Watson comes around the corner.
"Finally awake?" She rhetorically asks with a playful tone to her voice. Spider-Man's heart skips a beat, she didn't take off my mask, did she? MJ happens to be carrying medical supplies, she sets them down on the coffee table and sits on the couch next to Spider-Man. "Well," MJ starts, "now that you're awake. I'm going to have to take off your mask to get a good look at the damage," MJ lifts her hand and starts to grip the cloth mask when Spider-Man grabs her wrist.
"Yeah, I wouldn't recommend doing that," Spider-Man says in a serious voice but turns it more jokey, "might not like what you see," But MJ continues anyway with Spider-Man too hurt to move. Eventually, the face becomes not the symbol but Peter Parker's. MJ gasps and stands up, walking away from the couch. Peter looks at her with sorrow, "Told you you wouldn't like what you see," Peter gestures to his bruises.
"But," MJ shockingly asks, "it's you? You're Spider-Man!?" MJ throws the mask back to Peter, "I mean how long has it been? The glasses being gone and just acting so weird?" Peter sets the mask on the coffee table and struggles but stands up. MJ takes a deep breath, "Although, it is nice to finally have answers. But were you seriously not going to tell anyone, not me or May or even Harry?"
"No, I can't," Peter responds, "I have a responsibility to keep New York safe from these threats but I can't rope the people I care about into all of it or they could die," Peter looks down at his feet, "It's unfortunate, heck it even sucks sometimes, but I've coped with it,"
"I just can't believe that you've kept this to yourself for so long," Peter shrugs as if even he doesn't know.
"You can't tell anybody, okay?" Peter asks, "This is between me and you,"
"Sure, but eventually everybody is going to find out somehow," MJ responds.
"Yes, but that day isn't today," Peter finishes, laying back down on the couch in pain.
"Let's get you fixed up," MJ demands with confidence, gesturing to the medical kit she had placed on the coffee table.
Hours later, Peter is in casual clothes with bandages on him. Peter looks out the window, resting his forehead on his arm. MJ is sitting on the couch, watching TV.
"I should be out there, MJ," Peter comments, "they're still out there and I need to stop them,"
"And you will," MJ responds, turning her attention towards Peter, "you just need to rest up to your strongest before you get yourself killed,"
"I know, but I can't help but feel so responsible if people get hurt because of my inaction," MJ gets up and walks towards Peter.
"Yes, but Oscorp, Vulture, the Bank. You're overworking yourself, if you just get back to you get back to your highest strength you'll take them out no problem," MJ stands by Peter, "They're after you, right? They might wait for you to make your move,"
"But what if they try to lure me? Like the Bank?"
"Then, do whatever you want," MJ walks away as it starts to lightly rain. She goes to grab her jacket and her purse. Peter looks at his feet. "I'm going to go out, grab something from the store," Peter looks back up, "movie night when I get back?"
"Sure, I'll be here," Peter enthusiastically responds.
"You better," MJ heads out the door, Peter looks right back at his feet in deep thought. Then he looks up and grabs the red and purple suit. Spider-Man limps out the window onto the fire escape. He crawls onto the roof, he sees MJ's car roar to life, and drives away. In shame, he starts to swing with one web shooter. Spider-Man arrives at Peter's apartment. He opens the window immediately grabs another web shooter and leaves.
Spider-Man swings through the city as rain sprinkles on him. He breathes heavily as even swinging tires him out. Spider-Man thinks about how he betrayed MJ even if he makes it back without her knowing. While he's distracted, he runs into a building. He lets out a scream before sticking to the wall and climbing it.
Before he reaches the top, he hears a noise of honking. Spider-Man looks down and sees Kearney's truck swerving through the streets. Without a second thought, pulls out his phone at dials 911.
"911 what's your emergency?" The operator asks.
"I'm on 96th Street and there's a rampaging truck charging down it, I think it's the same one from the Oscorp attack a couple of days ago," Spider-Man hangs up and waits for the truck to be in a good enough position. He is almost giddy, sure that this will be the end of the brute's terror. The truck is right below Spider-Man and he jumps off the building and starts a swing toward the truck. He lands on the truck. The driver swerves and the truck falls on its side, sending sparks everywhere. Spider-Man climbs to the side of the truck as it crashes into some cars. Spider-Man turns around and fires webs at nearby buildings to slow the truck down.
Suddenly, Spider-Man's spider-sense starts tingling. He looks to his left when Kearney comes bursting out of the side of the truck and climbs onto it. Spider-Man lets go of the webs as the truck stops and Kearney attempts to punch Spider-Man but the hero dodges out of the way. News helicopters start to flood the scene as police sirens ring in the background. Kearney jumps off the truck.
Meanwhile, Captain George Stacy rides in the passenger seat of a police car. The captain is on his walkie-talkie.
"Alright people, here's the plan," Captain Stacy starts, "we don't want to take the brute out with firepower. If we just pray that Spider-Man will be in the area distracting him then hopefully we can ambush him with our tasers. Remember, don't get too close,"
Kearney rips one of the wheels off the truck and throws it at Spider-Man. He is able to move out of the way and jump in the air to kick Kearney in the face. Spider-Man lands back on the truck.
MJ is walking around the store, looking at first-aid kits. She notices people crowding up at the TVs. She turns her head to one of the TVs closer to the ceiling. She sees two figures fighting out by a sideways truck and blocking up traffic.
"Peter I swear to god," MJ storms out of the store and into her rain-covered car.
Kearney grabs Spider-Man's leg and throws him back on the street. Spider-Man lands on his feet and gets back in a fighting position.
"You're slower," Kearney taunts, "are you sure you should be out here?"
"Yeah, to stop you," Spider-Man responds, "right here and now," Kearney charges at the hero and he punches Kearney in the face. Kearney attempts to grab the masked warrior but he jumps and flips out of the way. Kearney throws a slap at Spider-Man but he grabs Kearney's giant hand. Kearney throws Spider-Man across the street and he hits a building. Kearney looks around and notices Police cars behind the truck. Putting two and two together Kearney rushes and takes cover by another car as the cops shoot their tasers at the brute. Kearney picks up the car and throws it at the cops.
MJ stomps up the stairs of her apartment building and angrily unlocks her apartment door. She opens the door to see an empty apartment and sees Peter's clothes on the ground. She grabs a pillow from that couch and throws it in anger.
Spider-Man leaps back into action, webbing the car that Kearney threw and pulls it toward him. He spins it around and throws it back at Kearney. Kearney catches it and rips it in two. Spider-Man swings to Kearney and kicks him, jumping off and lands on the street. Kearney breathes heavily, using the wall of a building as support. Spider-Man is shocked.
"Alright, don't expect me to fall for that trick," Spider-Man quips, but to his surprise, Kearney starts shrinking. The drug has worn off, and now Kearney is just a man in oversized clothes.
"You're under arrest!" Captain Stacy yells out, coming around the truck with his gun out. Cops start to swarm Kearney as they read his rights to him. Spider-Man lies down on the street, resting in the rain.
